Employee Spotlight: John

A Creative Builder, Problem Solver, and Lifelong Tinkerer

John joined WorkCentive in December 2016 and is approaching 10 years with the team. Prior to WorkCentive, he worked with SPM and EPM solutions, building a strong foundation in performance management systems. A chance reconnection with a university friend led him to Noah Bass, WorkCentive’s CEO. What started as an interview quickly became a conversation between two like-minded problem solvers. John often jokes that he interviewed Noah just as much as Noah interviewed him, and it was clear early on that the culture and leadership style were the right fit.

What drew John to WorkCentive was the balance between innovation and practicality. He appreciated Noah’s open-door policy and straightforward approach. There was room to try new ideas and build creative solutions, but always with a focus on delivering consistent, high-quality results. That mindset aligned perfectly with John’s own approach to work.

One of his favorite projects at WorkCentive was building a new on-premises implementation for a client who had previously struggled with their system. John rebuilt the necessary infrastructure from the ground up, including logic structures, tables, export mechanisms, and batch scripts for file processing. The result was a clean, efficient system that required very little ongoing maintenance.   For John, the most rewarding part was having the space to design thoughtful solutions, solve challenges creatively, and ensure long-term stability for the client.

Outside of client work, John enjoys building tools of his own. After helping a friend design a Python-based expense tracking tool, he decided to create one for himself. His version includes fuzzy search logic to classify expenses more intelligently, blending structure with experimentation. For John, making things better, cleaner, and more efficient is simply fun.

Earlier in his career, a university co-op term with the government helped shape his perspective. Faced with the need to track carriers such as ships and planes, he and his colleagues built a practical solution using Microsoft Access, SQL Server, and VBA. That experience reinforced an important lesson: impactful solutions do not always require complex or expensive technology. Sometimes creativity and a clear understanding of the problem are all you need.

Outside of work, John enjoys road trips and great food - whether he is discovering it or making it himself. A winter drive to Quebec City with his wife stands out as a favorite memory. After navigating a heavy snowstorm, they woke up to a beautiful, crisp morning filled with coffee, fresh croissants, and the charm of the old city.

In addition to experimenting in the kitchen - trying new ingredients and refining recipes - something many people may not know is that John spent much of his twenties as an amateur photographer. He gravitated toward urban settings, capturing long-exposure cityscapes and graffiti during travels and road trips, another outlet for his creative mindset.

Whether building infrastructure for a client, designing a personal tool, or perfecting a new recipe, John brings creativity, technical depth, and a builder’s mindset to everything he does. His steady problem-solving approach and passion for making things work better continue to make a lasting impact at WorkCentive.
